What is behenyl alcohol?
Behenyl alcohol is a saturated fatty alcohol with the chemical formula C22H46O. It belongs to the so-called long-chain alcohols, which consist of more than 16 carbon atoms. It is a white, waxy solid that melts at around 65°C.
Behenyl alcohol is obtained from vegetable oils, primarily rapeseed oil. It is therefore palm oil-free and biodegradable. It should not be confused with ethanol or other short-chain alcohols, which can dry out or irritate the skin.
How does behenyl alcohol work?
Behenyl alcohol has several functions in cosmetic formulations. It can be used as an emulsifier or co-emulsifier to bind oil and water phases. It can also act as a thickener and stabilizer to improve the consistency and shelf life of products.
