Preservative
Preservatives in dog food are substances that are added to extend the shelf life of the food. They prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and yeasts that could spoil the food. There are natural preservatives, such as vitamin E (often referred to as tocopherols), vitamin C and rosemary extract, and synthetic preservatives, such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and ethoxyquin.
While natural preservatives are often considered safer and healthier, synthetic preservatives are also approved in the EU and many other parts of the world under strict safety regulations. The choice of preservative depends on several factors, including the type of dog food, the expected shelf life and specific health considerations for the dog. It is important to read the label of the dog food and be aware of the specific ingredients and their effects on your dog's health.
