Rich in carbohydrates
When you read that something is "high in carbohydrates", it means that a significant proportion of the energy in that food comes from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are one of the main sources of energy in the diet and can come from a variety of sources such as grains, vegetables and fruits.
For dogs, carbohydrates provide quick energy, but can have different effects on your dog's health depending on the type and amount. Simple carbohydrates, which are digested quickly, can cause a rapid rise and fall in blood sugar levels in some dogs. This can be problematic for dogs with certain health conditions, such as diabetes.
Complex carbohydrates that are digested more slowly, such as whole grains or certain vegetables, can provide a more consistent source of energy and are usually preferable. They can also help your dog feel fuller for longer and can promote healthy digestion through their fiber.
However, it's important to balance your dog's diet and ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need, including proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Excessive carbohydrate consumption can lead to weight gain and other health problems.
