The Bavarian turnip is a form of turnip, a plant species from the cruciferous family. It is closely related to the autumn turnip, water turnip, stalk turnip or stubble turnip. The seeds are round and reddish-brown to black. The flowers are yellow and the leaves are strongly divided.

What does the Bavarian turnip look like?

The Bavarian turnip has an elongated shape and is only ten to 15 centimetres long and three to five centimetres thick. Its skin is light brown to beige and the flesh is white. It is very similar to the Teltow turnip and the turnip stalk (leafy vegetable).

What does the Bavarian turnip taste like?

The Bavarian turnip has a spicy taste reminiscent of kohlrabi or horseradish. It does not overcook and remains firm to the bite. It is usually eaten boiled or steamed as a vegetable or raw as a salad. A well-known recipe from Bavaria is "Bayerische Rübentauch mit Schmalznudel".

What are the benefits of Bavarian turnip for dogs?

Bavarian turnip can be a healthy addition to a dog's diet. It contains many vitamins (especially vitamin C), minerals (such as potassium, calcium and iron) and fiber. These can strengthen the immune system, aid digestion and support bone structure. Beetroot can also stimulate the appetite and regulate blood sugar levels.

What are the disadvantages of Bavarian turnip for dogs?

Bavarian turnip should only be fed to dogs in moderation. Too much can lead to flatulence, diarrhea or stomach problems. Care should also be taken to ensure that the beetroot is thoroughly washed or peeled, as it may contain pesticides or harmful substances. The leaves should not be fed as they can contain too much oxalic acid, which can lead to kidney stones.

 

The Bavarian turnip is an interesting turnip from Bavaria that is also suitable for dogs. It has a spicy taste and many health benefits. However, it should only be fed in small quantities and good quality should be ensured.
