In this article, you'll find out what apricot strudel is, how you can make it yourself and what advantages and disadvantages it has for your four-legged friend.

What is apricot strudel?

Apricot strudel is a strudel, i.e. a pastry made from a very thin dough wrapped around a filling. The dough consists of flour, water, oil, vinegar and egg and is pulled into a large rectangular shape with your hands. The filling consists of fresh or dried apricots mixed with sugar, cinnamon, almonds or nuts and breadcrumbs. The strudel is then rolled up, brushed with butter and baked in the oven until golden brown and crispy.

How do you make apricot strudel yourself?

Making apricot strudel yourself is not as difficult as it may sound. You only need a few ingredients and a little patience. Here is a simple recipe for an apricot strudel for two people:

Ingredients

  • 200 g flour
  • 4 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 1 tsp fruit vinegar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 500 g apricots
  • 50 g ground almonds
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cornflour
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • powdered sugar for dusting
  • Vanilla sauce to serve

Preparation

  1. Place the flour on a clean work surface, make a well and add the egg, 1 teaspoon of oil, vinegar and a pinch of salt. Add 3 tablespoons of lukewarm water, a little at a time, and knead into a smooth dough. Shape the dough into a ball, brush with the remaining oil (1 tbsp), wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 60 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 220 degrees (fan oven: 200 degrees). Wash, halve and stone the apricots, cut into wedges. Dust with cornflour and set aside.
  3. Lay out a clean kitchen towel and dust thinly with flour. Roll out the dough a little on it, then use your hands to get under the dough and stretch it out in all directions. It should be as thin as possible (approx. 30 x 50 cm).
  4. Sprinkle the dough with almonds, breadcrumbs and 2 tbsp sugar. Spread the apricots on top, sprinkle with the remaining sugar (1 tbsp) and cinnamon. Melt the butter, brush the edges of the pastry with a little butter. Fold in the short sides, roll up the strudel lengthways using the cloth.
  5. Place seam side down on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Brush with butter. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, brush with butter again. Reduce the oven temperature to 200 degrees (fan oven: 180 degrees), bake the strudel for approx. 20 minutes. Remove, brush with butter and dust with powdered sugar.
  6. Cut the strudel into pieces and serve with vanilla sauce.

What are the benefits of apricot strudel for dogs?

Apricot strudel is not only delicious for humans, but also for dogs. Apricots contain many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that strengthen the immune system, nourish the skin and coat and aid digestion. They are also rich in fiber, which satiates and regulates blood sugar levels. Almonds and nuts provide healthy fats, protein and calcium, which are important for strong bones, muscles and nerves. The dough is a good source of carbohydrates, which provide energy and fill the stomach.

What are the disadvantages of apricot strudel for dogs?

Apricot strudel is good for dogs, but only in moderation. Too much apricot strudel can lead to obesity, dental problems and stomach ache. You should also make sure that the strudel does not contain any apricot pits or stones, as these are poisonous for dogs and can lead to vomiting, diarrhea or even intestinal obstruction. This is why you should only ever use ripe apricots and pit them thoroughly. Sugar, cinnamon and butter are also not ideal for dogs, as they can lead to diabetes, liver problems or pancreatitis. This is why you should only sweeten and grease the strudel sparingly and not pour custard over it.

Apricot strudel is a delicious pastry that you can also share with your dog. It contains lots of healthy ingredients that are good for your dog, as long as you don't overdo it. Apricot strudel is therefore a great way to give your dog a treat and offer him some variety. Enjoy your meal!
