Weisswurst

A representation of Weisswurst

Weisswurst is a typical Bavarian specialty made from finely chopped veal, pork back fat and spices. The sausage has a white color because it is not salted with nitrite curing salt, but with normal table salt. It is cooked in hot water and traditionally eaten with sweet mustard, pretzels and wheat beer.

But is veal sausage also suitable for dogs? In this article, you will find out what weisswurst means for dogs and what advantages and disadvantages it has.

What is weisswurst?

Weisswurst is a boiled sausage that originated in Munich. It is said to have been invented in 1857 in the "Zum Ewigen Licht" inn on Marienplatz when the inn butcher Joseph Moser ran out of sheep casings for his veal sausages. Instead, he filled pig intestines with the finished mixture and boiled them in hot water to prevent them from bursting.

The weisswurst consists of veal, pork back fat, cooked calf's head meat and ice cream. It is seasoned with table salt, parsley, pepper, lemon powder, mace and onions. Sometimes ginger and cardamom are also added. At least 51% of the lean meat must be veal.

Weisswurst is made fresh and should be eaten on the same day. As the saying goes: the Weißwurst must not hear the "12 o'clock bell". This means that it should be eaten before 12 noon. The weisswurst is dipped in sweet mustard by hand and sucked or pulled out of the skin. This is also called "zuzeln". Alternatively, the sausage can also be cut open and the sausage meat removed.

Is weisswurst healthy for dogs?

Weisswurst is not healthy for dogs. It contains too much fat, salt and spices, which are difficult for the dog's stomach to digest. In addition, the sausage skin can lead to intestinal obstruction if swallowed by the dog.

High-fat foods can cause diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain in dogs. In the worst case, this can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis. Foods high in salt can increase blood pressure and lead to cardiovascular problems. Spices such as pepper or onions can irritate the mucous membranes or lead to anemia.

Weisswurst is therefore not suitable food for dogs. If your dog has eaten a small amount of weisswurst, you don't need to worry too much. But you should make sure that he drinks enough water and does not show any symptoms. If your dog has eaten large amounts of weisswurst or shows signs of discomfort, you should consult a vet.

Are there alternatives to weisswurst for dogs?

If you want to do something good for your dog, you can give him other treats that are healthier for him instead of weisswurst. For example, you can cook or roast lean meat such as chicken or beef and cut it into small pieces. You can also offer him vegetables such as carrots or cucumbers, raw or cooked. Or you can bake him special dog biscuits or cakes.

However, make sure that you only give your dog small amounts of these treats and subtract them from his normal food ration. Too many treats can lead to obesity or deficiency symptoms.

Weisswurst is a delicious Bavarian specialty, but it is not suitable for dogs. It contains too much fat, salt and spices, which can damage the dog's stomach. The sausage skin can also lead to intestinal obstruction. If you want to do something good for your dog, you should give him other treats that are healthier for him.
