Kefir

A representation of Kefir

You may have heard of kefir, a milk-like drink made from fermented milk. Kefir is rich in probiotic bacteria, which are good for the intestinal flora. But is kefir also suitable for dogs? In this article, you'll find out what kefir is, what its benefits and disadvantages are and how you can feed it to your dog.

What is kefir?

Kefir is a sour milk drink that is made by adding so-called kefir grains to milk. The kefir grains are a mixture of various bacteria and yeasts that live in a gel-like matrix. The microorganisms ferment the milk and produce lactic acid, carbon dioxide and alcohol in the process. The result is a thick, sour and slightly sparkling drink with a characteristic taste.

Kefir has a long tradition in various regions of the world, especially in Eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It is considered to be beneficial to health as it contains many nutrients such as protein, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12 and folic acid. It is also said to strengthen the immune system, improve digestion and protect against infections.

What are the benefits of kefir for dogs?

Kefir can also have some benefits for dogs if you feed it in moderation. The probiotic bacteria in kefir can have a positive effect on your dog's intestinal flora and thus promote digestion. This can be particularly helpful for dogs with sensitive stomachs or intestinal problems. Kefir can also help with parasite infestations such as giardia or coccidia by restoring the balance of intestinal bacteria.

Kefir can also strengthen your dog's immune system, as a large part of the immune system is located in the intestines. By stimulating the intestinal flora, kefir can promote the production of antibodies and immune cells and thus protect against pathogens. This can be particularly useful for dogs with allergies or susceptibility to infections.

What are the disadvantages of kefir for dogs?

Kefir is not suitable for all dogs and should only be fed in small quantities. One possible disadvantage of kefir is its alcohol content, which can be between 0.2 % and 2 % depending on the fermentation time. Alcohol is toxic to dogs and can lead to symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties or loss of consciousness. You should therefore only choose mild kefir with a low alcohol content and not leave it to stand for too long.

Another possible disadvantage of kefir is the lactose content, i.e. the milk sugar. Many dogs are lactose intolerant and cannot digest lactose. This can lead to flatulence, diarrhea or abdominal pain. Some of the lactose in kefir is broken down by fermentation, but not completely. You should therefore only give your dog small amounts of kefir and observe how he reacts to it.

Kefir is a fermented milk drink made by fermenting milk with kefir cultures. It contains nutrients and probiotic bacteria that can have a positive effect on the digestion and immune system of dogs. However, kefir should be given in small amounts as the alcohol and lactose content can be problematic. Monitor your dog's reaction to kefir to make sure it is well tolerated.
