Alcohol

A representation of Alcohol

Alcohol is a liquid made from fermented plants such as fruit or grain. It contains ethanol, which is toxic to dogs. Alcohol can even be fatal for dogs, depending on the amount ingested and the ethanol content. In this article, you can find out more about the effects of alcohol on dogs and how you can protect your four-legged friend.

How does alcohol affect dogs?

Alcohol is a cytotoxin that can cause major damage to the entire organism. It impairs the function of the nerves, brain, heart and liver. The symptoms of alcohol poisoning in dogs include

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • shortness of breath
  • impaired coordination
  • convulsions
  • Unconsciousness
  • coma

The effect of alcohol depends on the dog's body weight. The smaller the dog, the faster and more intoxicated it becomes. According to the American Kennel Club, the lethal amount of alcohol in dogs is between 5.5 and 7.9 g of pure ethanol per kilogram. This is the equivalent of a glass of wine for a small dog or a bottle of beer for a large dog.

How can I protect my dog from alcohol?

The simplest rule is: never give your dog alcohol on purpose! It is neither funny nor harmless to give your dog alcoholic drinks or food. It can endanger his life!

You should also make sure that your dog has no access to substances containing alcohol. This includes not only open bottles or glasses, but also leftover alcoholic cookies such as eggnog or rum balls, disinfectants or mouthwash.

If you suspect that your dog has swallowed something alcoholic, you should see the vet immediately. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of a full recovery.

Are there any benefits of alcohol for dogs?

No. There is no scientific evidence that alcohol has any positive effects on the health or behavior of dogs. On the contrary: it only harms them!

Alcohol is not for dogs! Keep it away from your best friend and enjoy it yourself - but in moderation, of course!
