Alkaloid

A representation of Alkaloid

Alkaloids are natural or artificial substances that contain nitrogen and have a strong effect on the nervous system. They are found in many plants, such as coffee, tea, cocoa and tobacco. Some alkaloids have medicinal applications, others are poisonous or hallucinogenic.

Alkaloids can be dangerous for dogs as they cannot break them down and quickly show signs of poisoning. In this article, you can find out more about the benefits and disadvantages of alkaloids for your dog.

Benefits of alkaloids for dogs

Some alkaloids have positive effects on dogs' health. For example, morphine from the opium poppy can relieve pain and atropine from the belladonna can treat cardiac arrhythmia. However, these alkaloids are only administered under veterinary supervision and in small doses.

Disadvantages of alkaloids for dogs

However, most alkaloids are harmful to dogs and can lead to severe poisoning. Symptoms depend on the type and amount of alkaloid, but can include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, convulsions, respiratory distress or even death.

Some examples of poisonous foods or plants with alkaloids are:

  • Chocolate: contains theobromine (a caffeine-like alkaloid), which can cause heart palpitations, nervousness or seizures.
  • Eggplants, tomatoes and other nightshade plants: Contain atropine (a poisonous alkaloid), which can cause tremors (trembling) and cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Boxwood: Contains cyclobuxine (a toxic alkaloid), which can cause diarrhea, vomiting, severe pain in the stomach and intestines and breathing difficulties.

Alkaloids are substances with a strong effect on the nervous system. They are usually dangerous for dogs and can lead to poisoning. You should therefore make sure that your dog does not eat or come into contact with any food or plants containing alkaloids.

If you suspect that your dog has eaten something poisonous, you should consult a vet immediately.
