A representation of Tomatoes

Tomatoes are tasty and healthy fruits that many people like to eat. But what about dogs? Can dogs eat tomatoes or are they poisonous to them? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about tomatoes for dogs.

What are tomatoes?

Tomatoes are fruits that belong to the nightshade family. They originally come from South America and were brought to Europe by the Spanish. Today there are many different varieties of tomatoes, which differ in shape, color, size and taste.

Tomatoes contain many vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that are good for your health. They have a high water content and are low in calories. Tomatoes can be eaten raw or cooked, for example as a salad, soup, sauce or juice.

Are tomatoes poisonous to dogs?

The answer is: it depends. Tomatoes are not generally poisonous to dogs, but they do contain a substance called solanine, which can be harmful to dogs. Solanine is mainly found in the green parts of the tomato, such as the stalk, leaves or unripe fruit. Solanine is a natural protective mechanism of the plant against predators.

If dogs ingest too much solanine, this can lead to symptoms of poisoning, such as

  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • heart problems
  • loss of coordination
  • muscle weakness
  • tremors
  • cramps
  • drowsiness

The symptoms can vary depending on the amount and size of the dog. In the worst case, solanine poisoning can even lead to death.

How much tomato can dogs eat?

To avoid solanine poisoning, you should only give your dog ripe, red tomatoes that have no green spots. You should also always wash the tomatoes and remove the stalk. You should make the leaves and stems of the tomato plant inaccessible to your dog.

The amount of tomatoes you can give your dog depends on its weight, health and tolerance. As a general rule, tomatoes are only suitable as an occasional treat and not as a staple food.

A rule of thumb is that you should not give your dog more than half a tomato a day.

What are the benefits of tomatoes for dogs?

If you give your dog tomatoes in moderation and in the right form, they can have some health benefits. For example, tomatoes contain:

  • Vitamin A, which is good for the eyes, skin and immune system
  • Vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and promotes wound healing
  • Vitamin K, which supports blood clotting
  • Potassium, which regulates blood pressure and improves kidney function
  • Lycopene, an antioxidant that protects against cell damage and can reduce the risk of cancer

Tomatoes can therefore help your dog to stay healthy and fit if you offer them in small quantities as a snack.

Tomatoes are not generally poisonous to dogs, but they do contain solanine, which can be harmful to dogs. Therefore, you should only give your dog ripe, red tomatoes without green spots that you have washed well and removed the stalk.
