Calcium phosphate is a chemical compound of calcium and phosphorus that is found in many foods and food supplements. But what does it mean for your dog? In this article, you will find out what calcium phosphate is, what tasks it has in the body and what advantages and disadvantages it has for your four-legged friend's health.

What is calcium phosphate?

Calcium phosphate is a salt made from calcium ions and phosphate ions. It occurs in various forms, for example as hydroxyapatite, dicalcium phosphate or tricalcium phosphate. Calcium phosphate is an important component of bones and teeth, as it gives them hardness and stability. It is also involved in many metabolic processes, such as muscle contraction, blood clotting and signal transmission in nerve cells.

What effects does calcium phosphate have on dogs?

Calcium phosphate has both positive and negative effects on the health of dogs. The benefits include

  • It promotes the growth and development of bones and teeth, especially in puppies and young dogs.
  • It supports the function of muscles, nerves and blood vessels.
  • It helps to regulate the acid-base balance in the body.
  • It can help in the prevention or treatment of calcium deficiency or rickets.

The disadvantages include

  • It can lead to overdose or intoxication if taken in excessive amounts. This can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy or cramps.
  • It can impair the absorption of other minerals such as iron or zinc if it is contained in the feed in excessive concentrations.
  • It can contribute to the formation of urinary or kidney stones when combined with high levels of magnesium or oxalates.
  • It can lead to calcification of soft tissues such as joints or blood vessels when combined with high levels of vitamin D.

How much calcium phosphate does my dog need?

The optimal amount of calcium phosphate for your dog depends on various factors such as age, size, activity level or health status. In general, however, a balanced calcium-phosphorus ratio in the food is important to avoid over- or undersupply. The recommended amount of calcium for dogs is around 50 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, while the recommended amount of phosphorus is around 40 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. This corresponds to a ratio of around 1:0.8.

How can you control your dog's calcium phosphate intake?

To make sure your dog is getting the right amount of calcium phosphate, you should follow the tips below:

  • Check the ingredient list and nutrition label of the food you're giving your dog. Make sure that the ratio of calcium to phosphorus is not too high or too low and that it does not contain unnecessary additives such as artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
  • Supplement your dog's diet with natural sources of calcium phosphate such as bone meal, eggshell powder or dairy products.

Calcium phosphate is a salt made up of calcium and phosphate ions, which occurs in various forms and is important for bones and metabolic processes. It has both positive and negative effects on the health of dogs, which is why the right amount in the food is important.
