How does tobacco affect dogs?
Dogs can ingest tobacco in various ways: by inhaling second-hand smoke, by eating tobacco products or through contact with contaminated objects. The effect of tobacco on dogs depends on the amount, duration and type of exposure. Possible effects include:
- Irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes
- Coughing, sneezing, panting and shortness of breath
- Increased heart rate and blood pressure
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
- Tremors, cramps and paralysis

How can you protect your dog from tobacco?
If you want to protect your dog from tobacco, you should first consider whether you can stop smoking yourself. This would not only be good for your own health, but also for that of your dog. If you can't or don't want to quit, you should at least take some precautions:
- Don't smoke around your dog or in enclosed spaces where he spends time.
- Dispose of tobacco products safely and out of your dog's reach.
- Regularly clean the objects your dog uses or touches, such as toys, blankets or bowls.
Tobacco is a serious danger to dogs that is often underestimated. You can save your dog a lot of suffering if you keep him away from tobacco or at least minimize his exposure. Your dog will thank you with his health and well-being.
