What is a superfood?

  • Linseed: Flaxseeds are rich in fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and calcium. They can aid digestion, add shine to the coat and detoxify the liver. Linseed should be ground or swollen so that it can be better absorbed by the dog.
  • Blueberries: Blueberries contain many antioxidants that can fight free radicals and prevent cell damage. They are also rich in vitamins A, C and E as well as zinc and selenium, which strengthen the immune system. Blueberries can be fed fresh or dried, but only in small quantities as they can otherwise cause diarrhea.
  • Stinging nettle: Stinging nettle is a plant that contains many vitamins, minerals, trace elements and chlorophyll. It can have an anti-inflammatory, blood-purifying, diuretic and immune-boosting effect. Nettles can be mixed fresh or dried into the feed, but only in small quantities, as they can otherwise cause irritation.
  • Hemp Hemp is a plant that contains a lot of protein, essential fatty acids, iron and magnesium. It can build muscles, nourish the skin, regulate blood pressure and calm the nerves. Hemp can be fed in the form of oil or seeds, but only in moderate amounts, otherwise it can cause drowsiness.
  • Pomegranate seeds: Pomegranate seeds are small fruits that contain many polyphenols. These are powerful antioxidants that can protect the cardiovascular system, lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cancer. Pomegranate seeds can be fed fresh or dried, but only in small quantities as they can otherwise cause stomach upset.

What are the pros and cons of superfoods for dogs?

Superfoods for dogs can have many benefits if they are dosed and prepared correctly. It can supplement your dog's diet, promote their health and increase their well-being. However, superfoods for dogs can also have disadvantages if they are used incorrectly or overdosed. It can lead to intolerances, allergies or side effects or cause interactions with other medications or foods. You should therefore always consult your vet before giving your dog superfoods.
