Nettles

A representation of Nettles

Stinging nettles are not only an annoying weed that can cause us humans burning pain, but also a valuable medicinal plant for our dogs. In this article you will find out what nettles are and what advantages and disadvantages they can have for your dog.

What are stinging nettles?

Stinging nettles are herbaceous plants from the nettle family. They grow in Europe, Asia and North America and prefer moist, nutrient-rich locations. The best-known species are the common nettle (Urtica dioica) and the common nettle (Urtica urens).

The stinging nettle has green, toothed leaves and small, greenish flowers. Leaves and stems are covered with fine hairs that secrete a burning liquid when touched. This contains formic acid, histamine and serotonin, among other things, and irritates the skin.

What are the benefits of stinging nettle for dogs?

Stinging nettle is a very nutritious plant that contains vitamin C, provitamin A, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium, among other things. It has various positive effects on the dog's body:

  • It stimulates kidney activity and has a draining and detoxifying effect. This can be helpful for urinary tract infections or kidney stones.
  • It stimulates blood formation and strengthens the immune system. This can be helpful in cases of anemia or infectious diseases.
  • Relieves inflammation and allergies. The flavonoids it contains have a decongestant and anti-inflammatory effect, while the histamine supports the body's own defense against foreign substances. This can help with skin problems such as itching or eczema.
  • It improves metabolism and digestion. The unsaturated fatty acids inhibit inflammatory cells in the intestine, while the chlorophyll stimulates glandular activity. This can be helpful for gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea or constipation.

What are the disadvantages of stinging nettle for dogs?

Although stinging nettle is very healthy for dogs, it also has some disadvantages:

  • It can cause skin irritation when touched. This applies to both humans and dogs. Therefore, you should wear gloves or use dried or cooked nettles when collecting and processing them.
  • Nettle can interact with medication. As it can lower blood pressure, it should not be given together with antihypertensive drugs. Caution is also advised with blood-thinning medication, as nettle can thin the blood.
  • An overdose is possible. Too much of the plant can lead to diarrhea or vomiting. Therefore, always ensure the correct dosage.

Stinging nettle is a herbaceous plant with green, toothed leaves and small greenish flowers. It contains many nutrients such as vitamin C, provitamin A, iron and potassium. Nettles can provide several benefits to dogs, including stimulating kidney function, strengthening the immune system, relieving inflammation and improving metabolism and digestion. Despite its health benefits, stinging nettle can cause skin irritation and should be given in moderation to avoid drug interactions and overdoses.
