What is Basic Green 4?
Basic Green 4 is a cationic dye from the group of triphenylmethane dyes. It has the molecular formula C23H25CIN2 and a molar mass of 482.64 g/mol. It has a dark green color with a metallic sheen and dissolves well in water, ethanol, amyl alcohol and methanol. How is Basic Green 4 produced?
Basic Green 4 is synthesized by obtaining the colourless leucobase from N,N-diethylaniline and benzaldehyde in the presence of zinc chloride or concentrated sulphuric acid. The leucobase is then oxidized with lead(IV), manganese(VII) or chromium(VI) oxide in acidic solution. The resulting carbinol base is dehydrated by heating and neutralized with sulphuric or oxalic acid. Oxalate (CAS 23664-66-6) is commonly used as an antiseptic.
What applications does Basic Green 4 have?
Basic Green 4 can be used for dyeing and printing textiles, leather and paper as well as in printing inks, inks, ribbons and ballpoint pen pastes. As an oxidizing agent, Basic Green 4 has a broad biocidal effect against parasites, fungal infestations and bacterial infections. The old drug (without modern approval) has long been used in veterinary medicine. It was also used in pond management and aquaristics. Basic Green 4 was also used in biochemistry. Friedrich Loeffler used the compound to enrich typhoid and paratyphoid pathogens.
