What is alfalfa flour?

Alfalfa meal is a product made from fermented alfalfa plant seeds. Alfalfa (also known as lucerne) is a legume that is mainly cultivated as fodder for livestock. It contains many proteins, vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Alfalfa meal is often used as an organic fertilizer in the garden, but also as an additive in animal feed or food supplements. It is said to promote the health and growth of plants and animals.

What are the disadvantages of alfalfa meal for dogs?

Alfalfa meal is not suitable for every dog. There are some potential risks or side effects that you should be aware of:

  • It can cause allergies if your dog is sensitive to legumes.
  • Itcan cause bloating or diarrhea if your dog eats too much of it or is not used to it.
  • It can affect hormone balance as it contains phytoestrogens. This can be particularly problematic for pregnant or lactating bitches.
  • Itcan weaken or intensify the effect of medication, as it can interact with some drugs. This applies in particular to blood-thinning or blood sugar-lowering drugs.

How much alfalfa meal can my dog be given?

There is no general recommendation for the dosage of alfalfa meal for dogs. The amount depends on various factors such as your dog's weight, health and feeding plan.

In general, less is more. Start with a small amount (e.g. one teaspoon per day) and monitor your dog closely. If he shows no negative reactions, you can slowly increase the amount.

You can either mix alfalfa meal into your dog's normal food or use it as an ingredient in homemade dog cookies. However, make sure that you don't use too much flour and that you add other healthy ingredients.

 

Alfalfa meal is a natural ingredient with many nutrients. It can be a useful supplement for some dogs. For other dogs, however, it may be incompatible or even harmful.
