Yams

A representation of Yams

Yam roots are a popular food in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world. But are they also suitable for dogs? In this article, you can find out all about yams and their advantages and disadvantages for your four-legged friend.

What are yams?

Yams (Dioscorea) are a genus of climbing plants that form starchy tubers. They belong to the yam family (Dioscoreaceae) and have nothing to do with sweet potatoes, with which they are often confused. Yams have a rough, scaly skin and white to yellow flesh. They taste less sweet than sweet potatoes and have a firm consistency.

There are around 800 types of yam, which are mainly cultivated in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. Some species are also used as medicinal plants, e.g. the yam (Dioscorea villosa), which has a high phytoestrogen content.

What are the benefits of yams for dogs?

Yams can have some health benefits for dogs when fed in moderation. They are high in fiber, which can aid digestion and increase satiety. They also provide important vitamins (especially vitamins A and C) and minerals (such as potassium, magnesium and iron) that can strengthen the immune system and support cell function.

Yams also have a low glycemic index (GI), which means that they cause blood sugar levels to rise slowly. This can be helpful for dogs with diabetes or obesity. In addition, yams have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, which can be helpful for joint problems such as arthritis or other chronic pain.

What are the disadvantages of yams for dogs?

Yams are not suitable for all dogs. They contain a lot of starch and carbohydrates, which can cause bloating or diarrhea in some dogs. They can also trigger allergies or intolerances, especially if they are fed raw.

Yams should therefore always be boiled or steamed to kill any germs or toxins. The skin should be removed as it is difficult to digest and can have sharp edges. The amount should be adapted to the dog's weight and energy requirements. As a rule of thumb, no more than 10% of the daily calorie intake should come from yams.

How can yams be prepared for dogs?

There are various ways to prepare yams for dogs. One simple method is to peel the tubers, dice them and boil or steam them in water. They can then be pureed or mashed and mixed into the dog's normal food.

Another option is to process the cooked yams into treats. For example, you can add some protein powder or peanut butter and form small balls. These can then be baked or frozen.

Yams are a nutritious ingredient for dogs that can provide some health benefits. However, care should be taken to ensure that they are well cooked and only fed in small quantities.
