Watercress

A representation of Watercress

Watercress is an aquatic plant from the cruciferous family. It has small, white flowers and dark green, spicy-tasting leaves. Watercress grows at springs or in flowing water and has been valued as a medicinal plant since ancient times. But is watercress also suitable for dogs? In this article, you can find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of this plant for your four-legged friend.

What is watercress?

Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is a winter-green, perennial plant that can grow up to 70 centimetres high. It has hollow stems that lie or float in water and leaves that are pinnate. The leaves are edible and have a spicy taste reminiscent of mustard or horseradish. It flowers from May to September.

Watercress contains many valuable ingredients such as vitamin C, iron, calcium, iodine and mustard oil glycosides. Among other things, these have a blood-purifying, diuretic, expectorant and anti-inflammatory effect. Watercress can therefore help with various complaints such as fever, cough, indigestion or skin problems.

What are the benefits of watercress for dogs?

Watercress can also be healthy for dogs in moderation. For example, it can strengthen the immune system, promote blood circulation and make the coat shiny. It can also serve as a natural worming cure and ward off parasites. Some dogs like the pungent taste of watercress and enjoy nibbling on the fresh leaves.

What are the disadvantages of watercress for dogs?

Watercress is not suitable for every dog. Firstly, you should make sure that the plant comes from clean water that does not contain any harmful substances or bacteria. Secondly, you should limit the amount you give your dog, as too much watercress can cause stomach and kidney irritation. The reason for this is the mustard oil glycosides, which can be toxic if overdosed.

Caution is also advised for dogs with thyroid problems or allergies to cruciferous vegetables. Watercress contains iodine and goitrogens (metabolism-inhibiting substances), which can affect the hormone balance. Allergy sufferers may also experience skin rashes or breathing difficulties.

Watercress is a healthy ingredient for dogs when fed in small quantities and from a clean source. It can support the immune system, ward off parasites and nourish the coat. However, attention must be paid to possible side effects such as stomach and kidney irritation, thyroid problems or allergies.
