What is sorbitol?
Sorbitol is a type of sugar alcohol that is chemically similar to glucose but contains an extra hydrogen atom. Sorbitol is about 60% as sweet as sugar and has more than half the calories of normal sugar. It does not cause tooth decay.
Sorbitol occurs naturally in some fruits, such as apples, plums and other plants like seaweed. However, it is also artificially produced and used as a sweetener in products such as chewing gum, diet sodas, low-calorie frozen desserts and baked goods.
Is sorbitol toxic to dogs?
