Sorbitol is a sugar substitute that is often used as a low-calorie sweetener in foods for humans and dogs. But is sorbitol safe for dogs? And what are its advantages and disadvantages? Find out everything you need to know about sorbitol and dogs in this article.

What is sorbitol?

Sorbitol is a type of sugar alcohol that is chemically similar to glucose but contains an extra hydrogen atom. Sorbitol is about 60% as sweet as sugar and has more than half the calories of normal sugar. It does not cause tooth decay.

Sorbitol occurs naturally in some fruits, such as apples, plums and other plants like seaweed. However, it is also artificially produced and used as a sweetener in products such as chewing gum, diet sodas, low-calorie frozen desserts and baked goods.

Is sorbitol toxic to dogs?

No, sorbitol is not toxic to dogs when taken in moderate amounts. Unlike other artificial sweeteners such as xylitol, which is lethal to dogs, sorbitol has no effect on blood sugar levels or insulin secretion in dogs.

Sorbitol is not broken down in the dog's body, but is excreted in the urine. It therefore has almost no effect on the dog.

What are the benefits of sorbitol for dogs?

Sorbitol has several benefits for dogs that make it a good ingredient for certain dog foods, treats or toothpaste.

  • Sorbitol has fewer calories than sugar and can therefore help control your dog's weight.
  • Sorbitol does not cause tooth decay and can therefore promote your dog's dental health.
  • Sorbitol has osmotic laxative properties, which means that it draws water into your dog's intestines and softens the stool. This can help with constipation.

What are the disadvantages of sorbitol for dogs?

Sorbitol also has some disadvantages for dogs that you should be aware of before feeding it to your dog.

  • Sorbitol can cause stomach and intestinal problems in dogs if given in excessive amounts. Symptoms include stomach pain, bloating, nausea and diarrhea.
  • Sorbitol can cause allergic reactions in sensitive dogs. Symptoms include skin rash, itching, swelling or breathing difficulties.
  • Sorbitol can impair the absorption of other nutrients in the intestine. This can lead to a lack of vitamins or minerals.

How much sorbitol is safe for dogs?

There is no precise indication of how much sorbitol is safe for dogs. This depends on various factors, such as your dog's weight, size, age and health.

As a general rule, you should always stick to the recommended daily dose stated on the product label. If you are unsure how much you can or should give your dog, it is best to ask your vet for advice.

Puppies should not be given sorbitol as their bodies cannot yet process the sweetener. Pregnant or nursing bitches should also not consume sorbitol, as it can pass to the puppies and interfere with their development.

Sorbitol is a sugar substitute that is not toxic to dogs in small quantities. It has some advantages, such as fewer calories, no tooth decay and a laxative effect. However, it also has some disadvantages, such as stomach and intestinal problems, allergic reactions and reduced nutrient absorption.

If you want to give your dog sorbitol, you should always stick to the recommended amount and watch out for possible side effects.
