Sorbitan monostearate

A representation of Sorbitan monostearate

Sorbitan monostearate is a food additive that is used as an emulsifier. This means that it helps to mix different ingredients that would not normally combine well. For example, it can ensure that fat and water in ice cream or chocolate do not separate. Sorbitan monostearate has the European approval number E 491 and is also sometimes referred to as sorbitan fatty acid ester.

What is sorbitan monostearate?

Sorbitan monostearate is a chemical compound made from the sugar alcohol sorbitol and the fatty acid stearic acid. Sorbitol occurs naturally in many fruits and is also produced artificially from glucose. Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid that is found in many vegetable and animal fats. To produce sorbitan monostearate, sorbitol and stearic acid are allowed to react with each other under heat and pressure.

Where is sorbitan monostearate used?

Sorbitan monostearate is mainly used as an emulsifier in the food industry. It can improve the consistency, appearance and taste of food by preventing fat and water from separating or crystals from forming. It can also extend the shelf life of food by reducing the oxygen content. Sorbitan monostearate is not approved for all foods, but only for certain products such as

  • Ice cream
  • Coffee creamer
  • Fine baked goods such as puff pastries, cookies or cakes
  • Glazes and coatings for pastries
  • Fat emulsions
  • Tea concentrates
  • Fruit jellies and jams
  • Chocolate and cocoa products
  • Chewing gum
  • Sugar confectionery
  • Desserts
  • Emulsified sauces

These foods are subject to maximum quantities that must not be exceeded. The permitted daily dose for sorbitan monostearate is 25 mg per kilogram of body weight.

Sorbitan monostearate is also used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. For example, it can be used as a carrier for medicines or as an ingredient in creams, lotions or ointments.

Is sorbitan monostearate harmful to dogs?

Sorbitan monostearate is considered safe for human consumption as long as the maximum levels are adhered to. The European Food Safety Authority has found no evidence of health risks from sorbitan monostearate. There are also no known negative effects of sorbitan monostearate on dogs. However, dogs should generally not eat foods intended for humans as they have different nutritional needs and some ingredients may be toxic to them. For example, chocolate, xylitol or raisins can be life-threatening for dogs.

If you want to do something good for your dog, you should give him special dog food or healthy dog snacks. These are tailored to his needs and do not contain any harmful additives. You should also always make sure that your dog has enough fresh water available.
