A representation of Chewing gum

Chewing gum is a popular product for oral hygiene and enjoyment. But what effect does chewing gum have on dogs? Is it harmless or dangerous? In this article, you'll find out more about chewing gum, its ingredients and its pros and cons for your dog.

What is chewing gum?

Chewing gum is a soft mass of various ingredients that can be chewed. The main ingredients are usually gum arabic (a natural resin), sugar or sweeteners, flavorings and colorings. Some chewing gums also contain other additives such as mint, menthol or fruit juices.

Why do people chew gum?

People chew gum for various reasons. Some do it out of habit or boredom, others to relieve stress or improve concentration. Many also chew gum after eating or smoking to freshen their breath or clean their teeth.

Is chewing gum harmful to dogs?

This question can easily be answered in the affirmative. If chewing gum contains xylitol, it is very dangerous for dogs. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that you can find in sugar-free chewing gum. In dogs, xylitol can lead to liver failure and clotting disorders. A bag full of xylitol-containing sweets can be fatal even for a large dog.

But even if the chewing gum does not contain xylitol, it can still cause problems. On the one hand, the dog can choke on the sticky piece or swallow it and thus block its gastrointestinal tract. Secondly , the high sugar content in chewing gum can lead to obesity, diabetes or dental problems.

Are there any benefits of chewing gum for dogs?

There is no scientific evidence that chewing gum has any benefits for dogs. On the contrary, there are many risks and side effects of chewing gum for dogs. Therefore, you should never give your dog chewing gum or let him play with it.

What to do if your dog has eaten chewing gum?

If your dog has accidentally or deliberately eaten one or more pieces of chewing gum, you should act immediately. Depending on how much and what type of gum he has eaten, the symptoms may vary.

The most common symptoms include :

  • Vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • weakness
  • tremors
  • seizures
  • jaundice

If you notice these symptoms in your dog or suspect that he has eaten chewing gum containing xylitol (even if he is not yet showing any symptoms), you should go to the vet immediately. Your dog will be examined and treated there.

To prevent your dog from coming into contact with chewing gum in the first place, follow these tips:

  • Always keep your own chewing gum out of his reach.
  • Always dispose of used chewing gum in a closed garbage can or bag.
  • Make sure your dog does not pick up chewing gum from the street or from the grass.
  • Instead, give your dog special chewing articles for dogs that care for his teeth and satisfy his chewing pleasure.

Chewing gum is not a suitable product for dogs. It can lead to serious health problems or even death. You should therefore never give your dog chewing gum or let him play with it. If your dog does eat chewing gum, you should consult a vet as soon as possible.
