A representation of Schlumbergera

Do you love cacti, but you also have a dog? Then perhaps you should get a Schlumbergera. This cactus is not only an attractive houseplant that produces colorful flowers in winter, but is also a relatively safe plant for your four-legged friend. In this article, you can find out more about the Schlumbergera ingredient in relation to dogs.

What is Schlumbergera?

Schlumbergera is a genus of cacti that originates from the rainforests of Brazil. There they grow as epiphytes on the branches of large trees. They have flat, segmented shoots that have no or only very short thorns. The leaves are actually thickened stems that photosynthesize. The flowers are zygomorphic and have a long tube from which the stamens protrude. The color of the flowers varies from white to yellow, orange, pink, red and purple. The flowering period is from November to January, which is why some species and hybrids are also known as Christmas cacti.

What are the benefits of Schlumbergera for dogs?

Schlumbergera is a relatively harmless plant for dogs. Unlike many other cacti, it has no sharp thorns that could injure your dog. It is also not poisonous to dogs like some other houseplants. However, this doesn't mean that your dog should eat it. If your dog eats too much of the plant, it can cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting or diarrhea. Therefore, you should still prevent your dog from nibbling on the plant.

What are the disadvantages of Schlumbergera for dogs?

Schlumbergera has few disadvantages for dogs, but there are a few things you should be aware of. Firstly, the plant needs a bright spot, but not direct sunlight. This means that you shouldn't place it within reach of your dog if he likes to lie on window sills or tables. Secondly, the plant needs high humidity, but not waterlogging. This means that you should spray it regularly, but not water it too much. If you don't do this, the plant can become susceptible to pests or diseases. This in turn can endanger your dog if it comes into contact with the plant.

Schlumbergera is a cactus for dog lovers that produces beautiful flowers in winter and is relatively unproblematic for your four-legged friend. However, you should make sure that your dog does not eat or injure itself on the plant.
