Rooster meat

A representation of Rooster meat

Have you ever heard of broiler meat? This meat comes from male chicks that are not needed for egg production and are normally killed immediately after hatching. Some initiatives rescue these chicks, raise them in a species-appropriate way and market them as meat. So broiler meat is not only a contribution to animal welfare, but also a high-quality source of protein for your dog. In this article, you can find out more about brother rooster meat and its advantages and disadvantages.

What is broiler meat?

Broiler meat is the meat of male chicks from laying hen breeds. These chicks are usually sorted out and killed immediately after hatching as they are unable to lay eggs and produce too little meat for fattening. This is a major ethical problem, as around 45 million male chicks are disposed of in this way in Germany every year.

In order to counteract this, initiatives such as the "Bruderhahn Initiative Deutschland" or "Haehnlein" have been in place for several years, which take in these chicks and give them a life on the farm. There, the brother roosters are kept in a species-appropriate manner, have plenty of exercise and are fed organic food. After around 18 to 22 weeks, they are slaughtered and sold as meat. The meat is usually certified organic and of high quality.

What are the benefits of meat from brother roosters for dogs?

Rooster meat has a number of benefits for dogs:

  • It is a high-quality source of protein that contains all the essential amino acids. Protein is important for your dog's muscle development, immune system and cell regeneration.
  • It is low in fat and calories, which is good for your dog's figure. It can also help to prevent or reduce excess weight.
  • It is rich in iron, zinc and vitamin B12, which are important for your dog's blood formation, nervous system and metabolism.
  • It is hypoallergenic, i.e. it rarely causes allergies or intolerances. This is particularly good for dogs with sensitive stomachs or skin problems.
  • It is sustainable and animal-friendly because it saves the lives of the brother roosters and allows them to be kept in a species-appropriate environment. You are also supporting the farmers who choose this initiative.

What are the disadvantages of brother rooster meat for dogs?

Brother rooster meat also has some disadvantages for dogs that should not be ignored:

  • It is relatively expensive compared to other types of meat. This is because it takes more time and money to raise brother roosters than conventional fattening. So you have to be prepared to spend more on your meat.
  • It is not available everywhere. You can usually only buy brother rooster meat directly from the producer or in selected organic stores or online stores. So you have to do some searching or ordering to get this meat.
  • It has an intense flavor that not every dog likes. Because broiler chickens live longer than broilers, their meat has a stronger flavor and a firmer texture. Some dogs like it a lot, others less.

How do I feed my dog broiler meat?

If you want to give your dog broiler meat, there are a few things you should bear in mind:

  • Introduce the meat slowly. Start with small amounts and mix it into your dog's normal food. Observe your dog's reaction and gradually increase the amount.
  • Pay attention to the right amount. The optimal amount of meat depends on your dog's size, age and activity level. As a rule of thumb, around 2 to 3 percent of your dog's body weight should consist of meat every day. This means, for example, that a dog weighing 10 kilograms should get around 200 to 300 grams of meat a day.
  • Supplement the meat with other ingredients. Broiler meat alone is not enough to provide your dog with a balanced diet. You should combine the meat with other ingredients such as vegetables, fruit, cereals or oils to cover all the nutrients. You can use the recipes for barfing (biologically appropriate raw feeding) or cooking for dogs as a guide.

Broiler meat is an interesting alternative for dog nutrition that offers many advantages. It is high quality, low in fat, hypoallergenic and somewhat more animal-friendly. However, it also has some disadvantages, such as its high price, low availability and intense flavor. You should therefore weigh up whether or not brother rooster meat is suitable for your dog and how best to feed it.
