The flounder is a flatfish found in the seas of Europe and North America. It has an oval shape and is brown or gray with dark spots. Flounder is a popular edible fish for humans, but is it also suitable for dogs?

Benefits of flounder for dogs

Flounder is a good source of high-quality protein, which is important for building muscle and keeping your dog healthy. Flounder also contains plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, which have an anti-inflammatory effect and can support your dog's cardiovascular system, immune system and skin. Flounder is also rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, iodine and selenium.

Disadvantages of flounder for dogs

Flounder is not safe for dogs. On the one hand, flounder can contain bones that can be dangerous for dogs if swallowed. The bones can injure or even pierce your dog's oesophagus, stomach or intestines. You should therefore always chop or fillet flounder well before giving it to your dog. Flounder can also contain harmful substances such as mercury or dioxin, which accumulate in the fatty tissue of the fish. These harmful substances can damage your dog's health if he eats too much flounder or too often. You should therefore only feed flounder in moderation and as a supplement to your dog's balanced diet.

How do I prepare flounder for my dog?

If you want to feed your dog flounder, there are a few things you should bear in mind. Firstly, you should only buy fresh or frozen flounder and avoid leaving it at room temperature for too long. Secondly, you should wash the flounder thoroughly and remove any scales. Thirdly, you should chop or fillet the flounder well and remove any bones. Fourthly, you should prepare the flounder gently, for example by steaming or stewing it. Avoid frying or grilling the flounder, as this can promote the formation of carcinogenic substances. Fifthly, you should serve the flounder without salt or spices, as these can be unhealthy for dogs.

Flounder can be a tasty and healthy treat for dogs when prepared correctly and fed in moderation. Flounder provides your dog with many nutrients that can promote his health. However, make sure that you do not feed your dog any bones or harmful substances and do not give flounder too often.
