What is cod?

Cod isa marine fish from the cod family that is found in the North Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean and the Baltic Sea. It has tender, firm meat that can be easily divided into flakes. Cod is a predatory carnivore that feeds mainly on smaller fish, mussels, crabs and worms. It can grow up to 1.5 meters long and weigh 40 kilograms.

What are the benefits of cod for dogs?

Cod is a varied and healthy source of protein for dogs. It contains numerous vitamins and minerals that promote dog health, such as vitamin B3, which is important for energy production and nerve function. Cod also contains valuable omega-3 fatty acids, which have an anti-inflammatory effect and support the immune system, skin and coat. Cod is also a low-fat fish that is suitable for sensitive, allergic or overweight dogs.

What are the disadvantages of cod for dogs?

Although cod is healthy for dogs, it should not be fed too often or too much. This is because cod can also contain harmful substances such as mercury, dioxins or PCBs, which accumulate in the fatty tissue of the fish and can be harmful to health if consumed in large quantities. Cod can also contain bones, which can be dangerous for dogs if swallowed. You should therefore always check the cod carefully and remove the bones before giving it to your dog.

How do you prepare cod for dogs?

Cod for dogs can be fed raw or cooked. If you feed it raw, you should freeze it first to kill any parasites. If you cook it, you should not add salt or spices, as these can be incompatible for dogs. You can offer the cod as a whole fillet or cut into pieces. You can also combine it with other ingredients such as vegetables, rice or potatoes to make a tasty dog food. However, make sure that you adjust the amount of cod to your dog's weight and energy requirements and do not feed it more than once or twice a week.
