Grapes

A representation of Grapes

Grapes are delicious and healthy fruit for us humans, but are they also suitable for dogs? In this article, you will find out what grapes are and what advantages and disadvantages they can have for your four-legged friend.

What are grapes?

Grapes are the fruit of the grapevine (Vitis), one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. There are many different types of grapes, which vary in color, size, taste and sugar content. Grapes are eaten fresh, dried into raisins or processed into juice and wine.

What are the benefits of grapes for dogs?

Please also note the disadvantages, as these unfortunately outweigh the advantages!

Grapes contain many vitamins (especially vitamin C), minerals (such as potassium, calcium and iron) and antioxidants (such as resveratrol), which can strengthen the immune system and protect against diseases. Grapes also have a high water content, which can meet the dog's fluid requirements.

What are the disadvantages of grapes for dogs?

Unfortunately, grapes are not suitable for every dog. There is evidence that some dogs can develop an intolerance or even poisoning after eating grapes. The exact cause is not yet clear, but it appears to be an individual sensitivity. Symptoms of poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy and kidney failure. The dangerous dose can vary from dog to dog, but it is recommended not to take any risks and not to offer your dog grapes.

What should you do if your dog has eaten grapes?

If you suspect or observe that your dog has eaten fresh or dried grapes, you should see a vet immediately. The sooner treatment is started, the better the chances of recovery. The vet may try to induce vomiting or flush the stomach and administer infusions to support kidney function.

Grapes are healthy for humans, but not necessarily for dogs. As there is no safe dose and the consequences of poisoning can be serious, it is better to offer your dog other types of fruit such as apples or bananas or special dog snacks.
