Why wine can be harmful
Wine contains alcohol, which is toxic to dogs. Alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, seizures and even death in dogs. The amount of alcohol that is dangerous for a dog depends on its weight and tolerance. In general, the less alcohol a dog ingests, the better.
Wine also contains grapes or grape juice, which are also toxic to dogs. Grapes can lead to severe poisoning and even acute kidney failure in dogs. The dose makes the poison here: 10-30 grapes can be very dangerous for a 5 kg dog. It does not matter whether the grapes are green or red.
Alternatives to wine
If you prefer not to use wine, there are a few alternatives that you can use as an ingredient:
- Apple cider vinegar: It has a similar acidity to white wine and adds a fresh note to the dish.
- Vegetable stock: This adds moisture and flavor to the dish and contains no harmful ingredients for your dog.
- Fruit juice: It can add some sweetness and color to the dish. However, make sure that the juice does not contain any sugar or artificial sweeteners.
Wine can be a tasty ingredient, but it's not necessarily good for your dog. If you want to use it, you should use it sparingly and let it boil down well. Or you can use other alternatives that won't harm your dog.
If you notice any signs of hypersensitivity or poisoning in your dog, you should see your vet immediately. We are not a substitute for a vet, but we try to be as accurate as possible. Every dog reacts differently and we recommend you get a second opinion or consult your vet if in doubt.
