What is Jiagoulan?

Jiagoulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a perennial climbing plant from the gourd family. It originates from southern China and is now widespread in many East and South Asian countries. It grows mainly in humid mountain forests up to 3000 meters above sea level.

The plant has long, thin shoots that can twine upwards on climbing aids or creep along the ground. The leaves are green and have five serrated lobes. The flowers are small and green-white. The fruits are small berries that are rarely formed.

Jiagoulan is mainly used for its leaves, which have a slightly licorice-like taste. The leaves contain many valuable ingredients such as saponins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and sugar compounds. The saponins are particularly interesting, as they have a similar structure to the ginsenosides in ginseng. This is why Jiagoulan is also known as five-leaf ginseng or women's ginseng.
