A representation of Extracts

Extracts are concentrated extracts from plants or other sources that contain certain active ingredients. They can be useful for dogs to alleviate various ailments or promote health. In this article you will find out what extracts are, what their advantages and disadvantages are and which extracts are suitable for dogs.

What are extracts?

Extracts are created when the healthy nutrients are obtained from the source. The advantage of an extract is that you have to consume smaller quantities than if you feed the source of the nutrient directly. Extracts can come in various forms, such as powder, tablets, capsules or drops. Depending on the type of extract, it can be added to the food or administered directly.

Extracts can have various benefits for dogs, depending on the active ingredients they contain. Some examples of extracts and their effects are

Silymarin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, choleretic, anti-scarring and immunomodulatory properties. Milk thistle extract can be used for liver diseases, detoxification or prevention.

What are the disadvantages of extracts for dogs?

Extracts can also have some disadvantages for dogs that you should be aware of. Some possible disadvantages are:

  • Variations in quality: Not all extracts are equal in their quality and purity. Some extracts may be contaminated or not contain the specified amount of active ingredients. You should therefore make sure you only buy high-quality extracts from reputable manufacturers.
  • Side effects: Some extracts can cause side effects in dogs, especially if they are overdosed or interact with other medications. For example, milk thistle extract can cause diarrhea or bloating in some dogs. Grapefruit seed extract can strengthen or weaken the effect of certain medications. Green-lipped mussel extract can cause allergic reactions in sensitive dogs. Therefore, you should always follow the recommended dosage and consult your vet before giving your dog extracts.
  • Cost: Some extracts can be quite expensive, especially if they need to be administered regularly. You should therefore weigh up whether the benefits justify the price and whether there may be cheaper alternatives.

Extracts can be a useful addition to a dog's diet to alleviate certain ailments or promote health. However, you should find out beforehand which extracts are suitable for your dog, what quality they are, what dosage they require and what side effects they may have.
