Eggshell powder

A representation of Eggshell powder

You may have heard of eggshell powder or even fed it to your dog. But what is eggshell powder and how does it affect your dog's health? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about this natural ingredient.

What is eggshell powder?

Eggshell powder is nothing more than dried and ground eggshells. Eggshells consist of around 95% calcium carbonate, an important mineral for bone formation and dental hygiene. Eggshells also contain other trace elements such as magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc.

How is eggshell powder produced?

To make eggshell powder, you only need eggshells from boiled or raw eggs. You should wash the eggshells thoroughly and allow them to dry. You can then grind them into a fine powder in a blender or coffee grinder. You can store the powder in an airtight container or feed it directly to your dog.

How much eggshell powder should you give your dog?

The recommended amount of eggshell powder depends on your dog's weight and calcium requirements. As a rule of thumb, one teaspoon of eggshell powder contains about 2 grams of calcium. An adult dog needs around 50 to 80 milligrams of calcium per kilogram of body weight per day. This means that a dog weighing 10 kilograms needs around 0.5 to 0.8 grams of calcium per day, i.e. around a quarter to a third of a teaspoon of eggshell powder.

However, you should make sure that your dog does not get too much calcium, as this can lead to health problems such as kidney stones or cardiac arrhythmia. You should also always combine eggshell powder with other nutrients such as vitamin D and fat so that it can be better absorbed.

What are the benefits of eggshell powder for dogs?

Eggshell powder can offer your dog various benefits, especially if he has an increased calcium requirement. For example, eggshell powder can:

  • Strengthen bones and protect against osteoporosis
  • Maintain teeth and protect against tooth decay and tartar
  • Support muscles and protect against cramps
  • Improve nerve function and protect against nervousness and stress
  • Strengthen the immune system and protect against infections
  • Promote blood clotting and protect against bleeding
  • Regulate digestion and protect against constipation or diarrhea

What are the disadvantages of eggshell powder for dogs?

Eggshell powder is generally well tolerated by dogs as long as it is given in moderation. However, there are some possible disadvantages or risks that you should be aware of. For example, eggshell powder can:

  • Lead to an oversupply of calcium, which can lead to kidney stones or cardiac arrhythmias
  • Lead to an undersupply of other minerals such as magnesium or phosphorus, which can lead to muscle tremors or bone weakness
  • Lead to an allergic reaction if your dog has an intolerance to eggs
  • Lead to a salmonella infection if the eggshells have not been adequately cleaned or heated

Eggshell powder is ground and dried eggshells, rich in calcium and other trace elements. Washed and dried eggshells are ground for production. The recommended amount depends on the dog's weight and calcium requirements. It has benefits such as strengthening bones and teeth, muscle support and improving nerve function, but too much calcium can cause health problems. Risks include possible oversupply, lack of other minerals and allergic reactions or salmonella infections with inappropriate eggshells.
