Clove flower oil is an essential oil extracted from the flower buds of the clove. It has an intense, spicy fragrance and is used in aromatherapy, cosmetics and medicine. But is it also suitable for dogs? In this article, you can find out more about this ingredient and its effect on your four-legged friend.

What is clove blossom oil?

Clove blossom oil is a concentrated plant extract obtained by steam distillation from the dried flower buds of the clove (Syzygium aromaticum). The clove is an evergreen tree that originally comes from Indonesia and is now cultivated in many tropical countries. The flower buds are harvested and dried before they blossom. They are dark brown and hard.

The oil is yellowish to brown and has a strong, spicy odor. It contains various chemical compounds that are responsible for its properties. The most important is eugenol, a phenol that makes up to 90 % of the oil. Eugenol has antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anesthetic properties. Other components are acetyl eugenol, beta-caryophyllene, eugenyl acetate and iso-eugenol.

How does clove flower oil work in dogs?

Clove flower oil has both advantages and disadvantages for dogs. This depends on how and in what dosage it is used.

Advantages

  • Clove flower oil can help dogs with dental problems. It can relieve pain, reduce inflammation and fight bacteria that cause tooth decay and gingivitis. To do this, put a drop of oil on a cotton ball and gently dab the gums or the affected tooth. However, make sure that the dog does not swallow or lick the oil.
  • Clove flower oil can also help dogs with skin problems. It can relieve itching, redness and swelling and promote wound healing. The oil can be diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut or almond oil and applied or massaged into the affected areas. Again, make sure that the dog does not lick or scratch the oil.
  • Clove blossom oil can also be used as an insect repellent for dogs. It can repel or kill fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other parasites. The oil can be diluted with water and sprayed or rubbed into the dog's coat. However, not too much oil should be used and the oil should not get into the dog's eyes or nose.

Disadvantages

  • Clove flower oil can cause side effects in dogs if used incorrectly or in excessive doses. Possible side effects include skin and mucous membrane irritation, allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, liver damage or blood clotting disorders.

Clove blossom oil is obtained from the dried flower buds of cloves. It has a strong, spicy smell and mainly contains eugenol. Clove flower oil can help dogs with dental problems, skin problems and as an insect repellent. However, it should be used carefully and in small amounts as it can cause side effects such as skin irritation and allergic reactions.
