We explain what buckwheat porridge is, how to prepare it, its advantages and disadvantages and how you can creatively incorporate it into your dog's diet.

What is buckwheat porridge?

Buckwheat porridge is a porridge made from cooked buckwheat grains, which is often refined with milk, water or broth. Buckwheat is not a grain, but a so-called pseudo-cereal that belongs to the knotweed family. It has a nutty taste and a soft consistency.

Buckwheat is rich in protein, fiber, minerals such as magnesium, iron, zinc and copper as well as vitamins such as B1, B2, B3 and B6. It also contains rutin, a flavonoid that strengthens the blood vessels and has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is also gluten-free and therefore suitable for allergy sufferers.

How do I prepare buckwheat porridge for my dog?

Preparing buckwheat porridge for your dog is very simple. All you need is buckwheat grains (preferably organic), water or stock (preferably without salt or spices) and a pan.

  • Rinse the buckwheat grains under running water and let them drain.
  • Place the grains in a saucepan and cover with water or stock in a ratio of 1:2 (e.g. 1 cup buckwheat and 2 cups water).
  • Bring the liquid to the boil and then reduce the heat.
  • Leave the porridge to simmer at a low temperature for about 15 to 20 minutes until the grains are soft and have absorbed the liquid.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and leave the porridge to cool slightly.
  • Your buckwheat porridge for your dog is ready!

You can feed the porridge on its own or mix it with some meat, fish or vegetables. Make sure that you don't add any ingredients that could be harmful to your dog, such as chocolate, onions or garlic.

What are the benefits of buckwheat porridge for dogs?

Buckwheat porridge has many benefits for dogs. It can be used as a healthy ingredient in a dog's diet because it is

  • is easy to digest and promotes intestinal health

  • contains rutin, which protects the blood vessels and inhibits inflammation
  • is gluten-free and therefore also suitable for allergy sufferers

Buckwheat porridge can therefore be a good addition to dog food, especially if your dog suffers from digestive problems, allergies or skin problems.

Buckwheat porridge also has some disadvantages for dogs that you should be aware of. It can:

  • provide too much energy if fed in excessive quantities, which can lead to obesity
  • lead to bloating or diarrhea if fed in too large quantities or too quickly, especially if your dog is not used to it
