Birch leaves are not only a beautiful sight in spring, but also a valuable natural remedy for dogs. Birch leaves contain many active ingredients that can have a positive effect on your four-legged friend's health. In this article, you will find out what birch leaves are, how they work and what you should look out for if you want to give them to your dog.

What are birch leaves?

Birch leaves are the green leaves of the birch, a deciduous tree or shrub. The leaves have an oval shape with toothed edges and are attached to long stalks. They fall off in the fall and can then be collected and dried. Birch leaves are edible and have a mild taste.

How do birch leaves affect dogs?

Birch leaves have several positive effects on the health of dogs. They have the following effects

  • Diuretic: They increase the amount of urine and thus flush the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract. This can help prevent or relieve inflammation and kill bacteria.
  • Anti-inflammatory: They relieve pain and swelling in joint problems such as arthritis or rheumatism.
  • Skin-caring: They promote blood circulation in the skin and heal eczema, wounds or allergies. They can also be used as a rinse or poultice.

How can I give birch leaves to my dog?

You can give your dog birch leaves as a single feed or as an addition to their food. You can buy them cut or as a powder or collect and dry them yourself. The recommended dosage depends on the size of your dog. As a rule of thumb

  • Small dogs (up to 10 kg): 1/4 teaspoon per day
  • Medium dogs (10 to 25 kg): 1/2 teaspoon per day
  • Large dogs (over 25 kg): 1 teaspoon daily

You can pour a little water over the birch leaves and leave to infuse or mix them directly into the food. However, make sure that your dog drinks enough to support the diuretic effect.

Are there any disadvantages or risks when feeding birch leaves?

Birch leaves are considered to be well tolerated and safe for dogs. Nevertheless, a few points should be borne in mind:

  • Do not use in pregnant or lactating bitches: Important minerals may be lost due to the diuretic effect.
  • Do not use in the case of renal insufficiency: The increased urine excretion can worsen the condition.
  • Do not overdose: Too much birch can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
  • Do not use permanently: Continuous use can lead to acidification of the body. A maximum course of four weeks is recommended.
  • Do not use in case of allergies: Some dogs can have an allergic reaction to birch. Watch out for symptoms such as itching, skin rash or shortness of breath.

Birch leaves are a natural remedy for dogs with many benefits for the kidneys, bladder, joints and skin.
