Beta-carotene

A representation of Beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is a plant pigment that belongs to the carotenoids. It is mainly found in yellow, orange and green vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin and spinach. Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A, which is important for many bodily functions.

Benefits of beta-carotene for dogs

Dogs can convert beta-carotene into active vitamin A and thus cover their need for this vitamin. Vitamin A is important for the dog's eyesight, skin health and immune system, among other things. Beta-carotene also has an antioxidant effect, i.e. it protects the cells from free radicals and can therefore slow down inflammation and ageing processes.

Side effects of beta-carotene in dogs

Beta-carotene has no known side effects or toxicity for dogs. However, care should be taken not to feed too much of it, as an overdose of vitamin A can lead to problems such as hair loss, bone deformities or liver damage. Beta-carotene can also affect the coat and skin color of certain dog breeds by depositing pigments. Depending on the breed, this can be desirable or undesirable.
