You've probably heard of arnica, a yellow flower that is often used in ointments or tinctures. But did you also know that arnica can be useful for dogs? In this article you will learn more about this plant and how to use it correctly.

What is arnica?

Arnica (Arnica montana) is a composite plant that is mainly found at higher altitudes. It grows in European mountains such as the Alps and Pyrenees. The flowers contain various active ingredients such as flavonoids, tannins and sesquiterpene lactones, which have an anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and circulation-promoting effect.

What are the benefits of arnica for dogs?

Arnica can help with various ailments in your dog, especially those related to injury or inflammation. For example, you can use arnica for

How do you use arnica?

Arnicashould only be used externally, as it is poisonous internally. You can apply arnica as an ointment or gel to the affected area or soak a cloth in a decoction or tincture and use it as a compress. Make sure that your dog cannot lick the treatment.

To make the decoction, boil 4 tablespoons of arnica flowers with 200 ml of water and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Once it has cooled, soak a cloth in it and place it on the wound.

To make the tincture, pour 500 ml of alcohol (70%) over 50 g of arnica flowers and leave to infuse for two weeks. Then filter the liquid and dilute it with water in a ratio of 1:10. Soak a cloth with this as well and place it on the wound.

You can repeat the treatment several times a day until there is an improvement.

What are the disadvantages of arnica for dogs?

Arnica also has some disadvantages that you should be aware of. For one thing, it can trigger allergic reactions, especially in sensitive dogs or if used for long periods of time. Therefore, watch out for possible symptoms such as redness, itching or a rash on the treated area.

On the other hand, arnica can lead to poisoning if your dog ingests it internally. This can happen if he nibbles on the plant or licks the treatment. The symptoms of poisoning can be

  • Vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • convulsions
  • cardiac arrhythmia
  • shortness of breath

Arnica is a medicinal plant with many benefits for your dog. It can help him with various injuries or inflammations and promote his recovery. However, there are also some disadvantages to be aware of.
