A representation of Allinase

Allinase is an enzyme found in garlic and onions. It is responsible for the typical smell and taste of these foods. But what does allinase have to do with dogs? In this article, you'll find out more about this ingredient and how it can affect your four-legged friend.

What is allinase?

Allinase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of alliin to allicin. Alliin is a sulphur-containing amino acid found in garlic and onions. Allicin is an organic sulfur compound that is responsible for the pungent taste and intense odor of garlic and onions. Allicin also has antibacterial, antiviral and antioxidant properties.

How does allinase affect dogs?

Allinase can have both positive and negative effects on dogs. On the one hand, allinase can promote the health of dogs by strengthening the immune system, improving circulation and reducing inflammation. On the other hand, allinase can also be harmful to dogs if consumed in excessive amounts. This is because allicin can damage dogs' red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. Allicin can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting and diarrhea.

How much allinase is safe for dogs?

The amount of allinase that is safe for dogs depends on various factors, such as the dog's weight, size and breed. In general, however, garlic and onions are toxic to dogs and should be avoided. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends that dogs should not consume more than 0.5% of their body weight in garlic or onions per day. This means, for example, that a 10 kg dog should not eat more than 50 g of garlic or onions per day.

How can you give Allinase to your dog?

If you want to give your dog Allinase, you should always consult a vet to determine the correct dosage and frequency. You should also make sure that you only use fresh or dried garlic or onions and not powdered or processed products. These may contain other additives that can be harmful to dogs. You can either give Allinase directly into your dog's mouth or mix it with their food.

Allinase is an enzyme found in garlic and onions that can have various effects on dogs. It can be both beneficial and harmful, depending on how much and how often it is administered. Garlic and onions are toxic to dogs and can lead to serious complications.
