Alliin

A representation of Alliin

Alliin is a sulphur-containing amino acid found in garlic, onions and other allium plants. It is odorless and tasteless until it is converted into allicin by the enzyme allinase. Allicin is the substance responsible for the typical smell and taste of these plants.

The benefits of alliin for dogs

Alliin has several positive effects on the health of dogs. For example, it can keep blood vessels supple, lower cholesterol levels, inhibit free radicals and strengthen the immune system. It also has antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic effects. Some studies have shown that alliin can also be effective against cancer cells.

The disadvantages of alliin for dogs

However, alliin also has some negative effects on dogs. It can damage the red blood cells and lead to anemia. The symptoms of alliin poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, pale mucous membranes and increased respiratory and heart rates. The amount of alliin that is dangerous for a dog depends on its weight, breed and individual sensitivity. In general, however, the more alliin a dog ingests, the greater the risk.

How much alliin can dogs eat?

There is no precise indication of how much alliin a dog can tolerate. Some sources recommend a small amount of garlic as a dietary supplement for dogs, others advise against it. To be on the safe side, it is best to avoid garlic, onions and other allium plants altogether or only feed them in very small quantities. You should also make sure that no ready meals or spices containing these ingredients are included in your dog's food.

Alliin is an ingredient in garlic and other allium plants with both positive and negative effects on dogs. It can be beneficial or harmful depending on the amount and the dog's tolerance. To avoid poisoning, you should be careful when eating these plants or avoid them altogether.
