Alfalfa is a plant that is primarily known as food for farm animals. But did you know that alfalfa can also be healthy for dogs? In this article, you'll find out what alfalfa is, what its benefits and disadvantages are and how you can feed it to your dog.

What is alfalfa?

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a perennial plant from the legume family. It is also known as alfalfa or perennial clover. Alfalfa has long roots that can reach up to four meters deep into the soil. This allows it to absorb many nutrients from the soil. Alfalfa has green leaves and purple flowers that attract bees. The plant is usually harvested as hay or silage and fed to cows, horses or sheep.

What are the benefits of alfalfa for dogs?

Alfalfa has many benefits for dogs due to its high content of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. Here are some examples:

  • Alfalfa can aid digestion as it supports the intestinal flora and prevents constipation.
  • Alfalfa can strengthen the immune system as it contains vitamins C, E and K as well as beta-carotene. These antioxidants protect the cells from free radicals and inflammation.
  • Alfalfa can strengthen bones and joints as it contains calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and silicon. These minerals are important for bone formation and cartilage formation.
  • Alfalfa can improve the coat and skin as it contains biotin, zinc and copper. These trace elements are important for the formation of keratin, the main component of hair and nails.
  • Alfalfa can regulate blood sugar as it has a low glycemic index. This means that it does not cause blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. This can be particularly helpful for dogs with diabetes or who are overweight.

What are the disadvantages of alfalfa for dogs?

Alfalfa also has some disadvantages for dogs due to its high protein and calcium content. Here are some examples:

  • Alfalfa can cause bloating as it produces a lot of gas in the intestines. This can be particularly unpleasant for dogs with sensitive stomachs or intestines.
  • Alfalfa can lead to kidney stones as it contains a lot of oxalate. This is a substance that combines with calcium and forms crystals. These crystals can damage or block the kidneys.
  • Alfalfa can lead to thyroid problems as it contains a lot of iodine. This is a mineral that affects the production of thyroid hormones. Too much or too little iodine can lead to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
  • Alfalfa can interact with medication as it contains saponins. These are substances that can influence the absorption or excretion of medication. This can lead to over- or underdosing.

How can you feed your dog alfalfa?

If you want to feed your dog alfalfa, there are a few things you should bear in mind:

  • Only feed small amounts of alfalfa as a supplement to their normal food. A rule of thumb is about one teaspoon per 10 kilograms of body weight per day.
  • Only feed fresh or dried alfalfa of organic quality. Avoid canned or fermented alfalfa.

Alfalfa is a perennial plant from the legume family, also known as alfalfa or everlasting clover. It contains many nutrients and has benefits for dogs such as aiding digestion, strengthening the immune system, improving bones, joints, skin and coat. However, too much alfalfa can cause bloating, kidney stones, thyroid problems and drug interactions. If you want to feed your dog alfalfa, it should be given in small quantities and in fresh or dried organic quality.
