The Epagneul de Pont-Audemer: The charmer among the water dogs

The history of the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer

The breed was created by crossing various types of spaniel with the Barbet, a French water dog. Its name is derived from the town of Pont-Audemer, where breeding began. These dogs were very popular with French hunters, particularly because of their stamina, excellent sense of smell and ability to work in difficult terrain.

Who is the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer suitable for?

The Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is ideal for active people who spend a lot of time outdoors and enjoy hiking or hunting. As this breed needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, it is less suitable for city-only homes unless it can be provided with sufficient exercise and activity.

Character: Friendly, playful and loyal

This breed is known for its friendly and playful character. The Pont-Audemer is loyal and develops a close bond with its family. It gets on well with children and other pets, provided it is socialized at an early age. Due to its intelligent and eager to learn nature, the Pont-Audemer is well suited to a wide range of activities, whether agility, obedience or as a therapy dog.

Appearance of the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer

The Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is a medium-sized dog with a strong, muscular build. Its characteristic coat is wavy to curly and water-repellent, usually in various shades of brown with light silvery speckles. Its expressive face is framed by thick curls that give it a unique look.

Grooming: A water-loving fur monster

Grooming the Pont-Audemer requires regular brushing to prevent matting and keep the coat in good condition. Especially after a day outdoors or in the water, the coat should be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Ears and paws require special attention to prevent infection. Bathing should only be done when necessary so as not to remove the skin's natural oils.

Health of the Epagneul de Pont-Audemer

The Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is generally a robust breed, however, as with all breeds, some genetic health problems can occur. These include hip dysplasia, ear infections and eye problems. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet will help to ensure your dog's health.

Size and weight

Male Pont-Audemers reach a shoulder height of around 52 to 58 cm and weigh between 20 and 25 kg. Females are slightly smaller and lighter, with a shoulder height of 50 to 55 cm and a weight of 18 to 22 kg.

Exercise and training: an energetic companion

The Epagneul de Pont-Audemer needs plenty of exercise and loves to let off steam outdoors. Long daily walks, jogging or swimming are ideal to keep them physically and mentally active. As these dogs are very intelligent, they benefit from varied training and tasks that challenge their natural instincts.

Specific training recommendations

Positive, reward-based training is particularly effective for the Pont-Audemer. Early socialization and obedience training are important to control their innate hunting instincts. He learns quickly and enjoys working with his human, which makes training easier.

Interactions with children and other animals

The Pont-Audemer is known for his patience and friendliness with children. He can be a great playmate as long as children treat the dog with respect. He usually gets along well with other pets, especially if he is used to them from an early age.

Recognition by the FCI

The Epagneul de Pont-Audemer is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and is listed in Group 7, Section 1.2 (Continental Spaniel - Type "Epagneul").
