History of the Bavarian Mountain Hound

The Bavarian Mountain Hound has its roots in Germany in the 19th century. This breed was bred specifically for hunting in the mountainous regions of Bavaria. The crossbreeding of Hanoverian Welding Dogs and Red Mountain Hounds resulted in a robust and adaptable breed that was able to cope with the demanding conditions of the mountains. The breed was officially recognized in 1912 and has since established itself as an indispensable helper for hunters.

Appearance of the Bavarian Mountain Hound

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is medium-sized and strongly built. It has a height at the withers of 47 to 52 cm in males and 44 to 48 cm in females. The weight is between 20 and 30 kg. Its coat is dense, smooth and moderately long, usually in shades of red with black or dark markings. The ears are medium sized and drooping, the eyes are dark and expressive.

Care and health

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is relatively easy to care for. Its coat should be brushed regularly to keep it clean and shiny. As these dogs are very active, they need plenty of exercise and mental exercise. Regular visits to the vet are important to monitor their health. The breed is generally robust but, like all dogs, can be prone to certain inherited conditions. These include hip dysplasia and certain eye problems.

Training and exercise needs

These dogs need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Long walks, hikes and games of fetch are ideal to satisfy their need for exercise.
