The Azawakh: a proud and elegant desert greyhound

History of the Azawakh

The Azawakh has its roots deep in the history of the Sahel, a region that stretches from the Sahara to the savannah. Originally, this breed was bred by the Tuareg nomads, who used the dog not only as a hunting companion, but also as a protector of their herds. The name "Azawakh" comes from the Azawakh Valley, a dry valley in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, where these dogs have lived for centuries.

The breeding of the Azawakh was based on strict criteria that emphasized both speed and endurance. This made the Azawakh an excellent runner, able to hunt gazelles and other wild animals in the harsh desert landscape. It was not until the 1970s that the Azawakh was brought to Europe, where it slowly gained recognition.

Suitability of the Azawakh as a pet

The Azawakh is not suitable for everyone. This breed requires an experienced dog owner who is familiar with the training and handling of greyhounds. The Azawakh is very independent and has a strong hunting instinct, which makes it less suitable for inexperienced dog owners. Nevertheless, it can be a loving and loyal companion if it is in the right hands.

Character of the Azawakh

The Azawakh is known for its proud and independent nature. He is intelligent, alert and extremely loyal to his family. They are often reserved towards strangers and can appear aloof. This breed has a strong protective instinct and is therefore well suited as a guard dog.

The Azawakh is cautious around children, but care should always be taken to ensure that both the dog and the children know how to treat each other with respect. The Azawakh generally gets along well with other dogs, especially if it has been socialized at an early age.

Appearance of the Azawakh

The Azawakh is a tall, elegant dog with a lean and muscular build. Its appearance is characterized by grace and speed. The breed has a short, fine coat that comes in a variety of colors, including sand, red, brindle and white. Its long legs and characteristic deep chest are striking and give it its impressive stamina.

Care of the Azawakh

Grooming the Azawakh is relatively uncomplicated. Due to its short coat, it only requires occasional brushing to remove loose hair and keep the skin healthy. Regular checks of the ears, teeth and claws are also important to detect infections and other problems at an early stage.

Health of the Azawakh

The Azawakh is generally a healthy breed, but can be prone to certain genetic diseases. These include heart problems, hip dysplasia and autoimmune diseases. It is important that breeders act responsibly and only use healthy animals for breeding to minimize the risk of such diseases.

Size and weight of the Azawakh

An adult male Azawakh reaches a shoulder height of 64 to 74 cm and a weight of around 20 to 25 kg. Females are somewhat smaller and lighter, with a shoulder height of 60 to 70 cm and a weight of around 15 to 20 kg.

Exercise requirements of the Azawakh

The Azawakh has high exercise requirements and needs plenty of exercise. This breed is ideal for people who enjoy long walks, jogging or other outdoor activities. The Azawakh can live in the city, but you should make sure it gets enough exercise and mental stimulation to avoid boredom.

Training recommendations for the Azawakh

Training an Azawakh requires patience and consistency. Due to his independent nature, he can sometimes be stubborn, so early and positive socialization is crucial. Reward-based training methods are most effective, as the Azawakh can be sensitive to harsh treatment.

Behavior of the Azawakh

The Azawakh is alert and reacts quickly to changes in its environment. It is a loyal companion that forms a close bond with its family. With the right socialization, it can get along well with children and other pets, even if it can be a little reserved at first.
