Do you want to provide yourself and your dog with a beautiful home? Then you should also pay attention to the plants you have in your home or garden. Because not all plants are suitable for dogs or even poisonous for them. In this article, you'll find out what plants are, what advantages and disadvantages they have and which plants you should choose for your dog.

What are plants?

Plants are living organisms that photosynthesize. This means that they use sunlight to produce sugar and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. Plants are among the most important suppliers of oxygen on earth and provide food and habitat for many animals.

Plants can look and grow in very different ways. For example, there are trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses and herbs. Some plants have flowers or fruit, others do not. Some plants are evergreen, others lose their leaves in the fall.

What are the benefits of plants for dogs?

Plants can have many positive effects for dogs. For example, they can:

  • Improve air quality
  • Provide variety and activity
  • Promote health
  • Increase well-being

Some plants can even be used as food or remedies for dogs. For example, chamomile or valerian can have a calming effect or parsley or mint can freshen the breath.

What are the disadvantages of plants for dogs?

Unfortunately, not all plants are good for dogs. Some can even be dangerous . For example, they can

  • Trigger allergies
  • cause gastrointestinal complaints
  • cause poisoning
  • Cause injuries from thorns or prickles

There are many poisonous plants for dogs that you should avoid at all costs. These include, for example, lily of the valley, tulips, ivy and boxwood. If your dog has eaten a poisonous plant, you should consult a vet immediately.

Which plants are dog-friendly?

Fortunately, there are also many non-toxic and dog-friendly plants that you can safely have in your home or garden. These include, for example:

  • Nasturtium: A colorful flower with edible leaves and flowers.
  • Birch: A deciduous tree with white bark and delicate leaves.
  • Orchid: An exotic houseplant with beautiful flowers.
  • Lucky chestnutA robust houseplant with glossy leaves.

You can also look for the 'pet-friendly' label when buying new plants.

Plants can be a great addition to your home - as long as you make sure that they are not poisonous to your dog. Find out about the properties of the different plant varieties beforehand and choose those that are good for your dog.
