What is Dutch elm orchid?

Slippery elm is a deciduous tree species that can grow up to 20 meters high. The bark contains a mucilage that serves as protection against enemies. This mucilage is also processed as slippery elm powder or tea and sold as a dietary supplement. Slippery elm has a sweet taste and a yellowish color.

How does slippery elm work?

Slippery elm has a soothing and anti-inflammatory effect on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. It forms a protective layer that soothes irritation and promotes healing. Slippery elm can therefore help with gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea, vomiting, ulcers or inflammation. Slippery elm can also stimulate digestive enzymes and support the intestinal flora.

  • Slippery elm can cause allergic reactions in some dogs, such as itching, swelling or difficulty breathing. You should therefore always test a small amount and look out for signs of hypersensitivity.
  • Slippery elm verbena can cause constipation if used excessively, as it makes the stool firmer. Therefore, always follow the recommended dosage and offer plenty of water.
  • Slippery elm can lower blood sugar levels, which can be problematic in dogs with diabetes. You should therefore always monitor the blood sugar level and adjust the insulin dose if necessary.

How do you give slippery elm to your dog?

Slippery elm herb is available in various forms, such as powder, capsules or tea. The dosage depends on the size and weight of the dog. A general guideline is

  • 1/4 teaspoon powder per 5 kg body weight
  • 1 capsule per 10 kg body weight
  • 1/4 cup of tea per 5 kg body weight

Slippery elm can be given directly into the mouth or mixed with food or water. Slippery elm should be given at least one hour before or after other medications to avoid interactions. It should not be given for more than two weeks at a time to avoid habituation.
