You may have heard of yeast extract or even eaten it yourself. But what is it actually and how do dogs tolerate it? This article will tell you everything you need to know about this ingredient.

What is yeast extract?

Yeast extract is a product obtained from yeast. Yeast is a microorganism that converts sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This process is also called fermentation and is used, for example, in the production of bread or beer. Yeast extract is produced when the yeast is separated and crushed after fermentation. This breaks open the cell walls and releases the ingredients. These are then filtered, concentrated and dried.

Yeast extract has an intense salty and spicy flavor. It is often used as a seasoning or spread. It contains a lot of protein, vitamins (especially B vitamins) and minerals. It is also rich in glutamic acid, an amino acid that acts as a flavor enhancer.

How does yeast extract affect dogs?

Yeast extract is not poisonous for dogs, but it is not necessarily healthy either. It has some advantages, but also some disadvantages.

Advantages

  • Yeast extract can aid digestion in dogs as it contains enzymes and probiotic bacteria.
  • Yeast extract can boost the dog's immune system as it contains antioxidants and B vitamins.
  • Yeast extract can improve dogs' skin and coat as it contains zinc and biotin.

Disadvantages:

  • Yeast extract can lead to obesity in dogs as it is very high in calories.
  • Yeast extract can cause flatulence or diarrhea in dogs as it contains a lot of fiber.
  • Yeast extract can cause allergies or intolerances in dogs as it contains glutamic acid.

Yeast extract is an ingredient that is not harmful to dogs, but it is not absolutely necessary either. If you give your dog some occasionally, make sure that it is only a small amount and that your dog does not have a negative reaction.
