A representation of Wild rumen meal

What is rumen meal and why is it so healthy for dogs? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about this special ingredient.

What is rumen meal?

Rumen meal is a by-product of the slaughter of ruminants such as cattle or sheep. It consists of dried and ground rumen, the first stomach of these animals. The rumen contains many plant components that are pre-digested by the bacteria in the stomach. This results in a nutritious and easily digestible food for dogs.

Rumen meal is available in different varieties: green or white, with or without hair, finely or coarsely ground. Green means that the rumen has not been washed and still contains many natural ingredients. White means that the rumen has been cleaned and has less odor. Hair is fiber, which can aid digestion. The grain size influences the consistency of the feed.

Wild rumen meal is a special form of rumen meal made from the rumen of wild animals such as deer or roe deer. It has a more intense taste and smell than normal rumen meal and can therefore be particularly appetizing for dogs.

What are the benefits of wild rumen meal for dogs?

Wild rumen meal has many benefits for your dog's health and well-being:

  • It is rich in proteins, vitamins (especially B-complex), minerals (especially iron) and trace elements (especially zinc), which are important for muscle development, the immune system and skin and coat health.
  • It contains many natural enzymes and bacterial cultures that support digestion and can improve the intestinal environment.
  • It has a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids (especially omega-3), which can have an anti-inflammatory effect and are good for the cardiovascular system.
  • It stimulates the appetite and can help fussy or sick dogs to develop a desire to eat again.
  • It is suitable as a supplementary food for BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Feeding) or as an addition to dry or wet food.

What are the disadvantages of wild rumen meal for dogs?

Wild rumen meal also has some disadvantages or risks that you should be aware of:

  • It can smell and taste very strong, which some people may find unpleasant. You should therefore make sure that you do not kiss or cuddle your dog after eating it.
  • It can trigger allergic reactions in some dogs, especially if they are sensitive to certain proteins. You should therefore always consult a vet if you notice signs of an allergy in your dog (e.g. itching, skin rash).
  • It can lead to obesity if you give your dog too much of it. You should therefore always pay attention to the correct dosage(approx. 1 tablespoon per 10 kg body weight) and reduce the total food accordingly.
  • It can lead to diarrhea if you switch your dog too quickly or if your dog has a sensitive stomach. You should therefore always start feeding rumen meal slowly and monitor tolerance.

If your dog has diarrhea, this can have various causes, such as

  • Influence of medication (e.g. antibiotics or antidepressants)
  • Infection by viruses, bacteria or other pathogens
  • Food intolerances
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

You should therefore always consult a vet if the diarrhea lasts longer than two days, if there is blood in the stool or if your dog shows other symptoms (e.g. fever, vomiting).

There aresome home remedies you can give your dog to help with diarrhea:

  • Water: Your dog loses a lot of fluid through diarrhea and can become dehydrated. You should therefore always offer him fresh water and make sure he drinks enough.
  • Light food: You should not give your dog normal food, but offer him a light diet of boiled chicken and rice. This is easy to digest and does not put too much strain on the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Healing earth: Healing clay can stabilize the intestinal flora and bind toxins. You can mix one or two teaspoons of healing clay with a little water and put it in your dog's mouth.
  • Chamomile tea: Chamomile tea has an anti-inflammatory and soothing effect on the gastrointestinal tract. You can offer your dog lukewarm chamomile tea to drink or dab it on.

Wild rumen meal is a healthy and tasty food for dogs that has many benefits for digestion, the immune system and the coat. However, it should always be fed in moderation and attention should be paid to tolerance. If your dog has diarrhea, you should take him to the vet and give him some home remedies.
