Turkey gizzards are a popular ingredient in raw dog food, but what are they and what are their advantages and disadvantages? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about turkey gizzards.

What are turkey gizzards?

Turkey gizzards are the gizzards of turkeys that are used to grind food. They have a thick, firm wall and contain small stones that act as a grinder. Turkey stomachs belong to the offal family and are rich in protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12.

What are the benefits of turkey gizzards for dogs?

Turkey gizzards are a tasty chewy treat for dogs that has many benefits:

  • They promote dental health by reducing plaque and tartar and massaging the gums.
  • They support digestion by binding stomach acid and positively influencing the intestinal flora.
  • They provide high-quality protein, which is important for muscle building and regeneration.
  • They contain important minerals and vitamins that strengthen the immune system and stimulate blood formation.

What are the disadvantages of turkey stomachs for dogs?

Although turkey stomachs are healthy, they are not without risks:

  • They can contain bacteria that can lead to diarrhea or vomiting. They should therefore always be fresh or frozen and washed thoroughly before feeding.
  • They can trigger allergies or intolerances if the dog is sensitive to poultry. In this case, other types of meat should be chosen.
  • They can lead to obesity if they are fed too often or in too large quantities. They should therefore only be given as a supplement to the normal food and the total amount of food should be adjusted accordingly.

How do I feed turkey gizzards correctly?

Turkey gizzards can be fed raw or cooked, depending on what the dog prefers. However, care should be taken not to overcook them, as otherwise valuable nutrients will be lost. In addition, no spices or salt should be added, as these can be harmful to the dog.

The amount of turkey gizzards depends on the dog's weight, age and activity level. As a rule of thumb, about 10 to 15 percent of the daily energy requirement should be covered by offal. This corresponds to about 20 to 30 grams of turkey gizzards per kilogram of body weight per week. Turkey gizzards should not be fed daily, but only two to three times a week to ensure a balanced diet.

Turkey gizzards are a tasty and healthy snack for dogs that has many benefits for dental health, digestion and the immune system. However, they should always be fresh or frozen and should only be fed in moderation to avoid possible disadvantages such as bacterial contamination, allergies or obesity. If you follow these tips, you can make your dog happy and promote his health.
