Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Australian tea tree. It has many positive properties, such as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. But is it also suitable for dogs? In this article, you will find out what tea tree oil can do for dogs, but also what risks it poses.

What is tea tree oil?

Tea tree oil is produced by distilling the leaves and shoots of the tea tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia). The tea tree belongs to the myrtle family and grows in Australia. The indigenous people have been using the leaves of the tea tree for centuries to treat illnesses such as fever, colds, skin infections and parasite infestations.

Today, tea tree oil is used worldwide for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. It is said to help against acne, psoriasis, fungal infections, tension, open wounds, rheumatism, smoker's cough and varicose veins, among other things.

How does tea tree oil work on dogs?

Tea tree oil can also be used on dogs, but only in a highly diluted form and for external use. It is primarily intended as a natural tick and flea repellent, but also helps with skin fungi or inflamed areas. This is because tea tree oil contains terpenes and phenols, which have an antimicrobial and antiseptic effect.

What are the dangers of tea tree oil for dogs?

Tea tree oil is not without risk for dogs. The terpenes and phenols, which are responsible for the positive effect, cannot be broken down by dogs (and cats). They accumulate in the body and can lead to symptoms of poisoning. These can manifest themselves in symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, shortness of breath, convulsions or unconsciousness. In the worst case, poisoning with tea tree oil can be fatal.

Poisoning can be caused by both internal and external application of tea tree oil. If the dog licks or swallows the oil, it enters the gastrointestinal tract directly. If the oil is applied to the skin, it can enter the bloodstream through the skin. Therefore, tea tree oil should never be used undiluted and should only be applied to small areas of skin.

How should tea tree oil be used on dogs?

If you want to use tea tree oil on your dog, there are a few points you should bear in mind:

  • Ask your vet for advice on the dosage and application of tea tree oil beforehand.
  • Only use pure, high-quality tea tree oil without additives.
  • Always dilute the oil heavily with a carrier oil such as almond or olive oil. The recommended dilution is 0.1 to 1 percent.
  • Only apply the oil to small areas of skin and avoid contact with the dog's eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Observe your dog after application for possible side effects or signs of poisoning.
  • Avoid using tea tree oil if your dog is sensitive or allergic to it or if you also have a cat in the household (tea tree oil is highly toxic to cats).

Tea tree oil is a natural household remedy that can also have positive effects on dogs. It can help protect against ticks and fleas or help with skin problems. However, tea tree oil is also very potent and can lead to poisoning if used incorrectly. You should therefore only use tea tree oil in consultation with your vet, only in diluted form and only in small quantities.
