Sushi

A representation of Sushi

Sushi is a popular dish from Japan that consists of cooked rice and raw fish or seafood. Some people love sushi and eat it regularly, others don't like it at all or have concerns about hygiene. But what about dogs? Can dogs eat sushi? And if so, is it healthy or harmful for them? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about sushi in relation to dogs.

What is sushi?

Sushi is a traditional dish from Japan that has been around for centuries. There are many different types of sushi, but the basic ingredients are always cooked rice and raw fish or seafood. The rice is seasoned with vinegar, sugar and salt and formed into small balls or rolls. The fish or seafood is cut into thin slices and placed on top of the rice or rolled up in it. Sometimes other ingredients such as vegetables, egg or nori (dried seaweed) are also added. Sushi is usually served with soy sauce, wasabi (spicy horseradish) and ginger.

Is sushi suitable for dogs?

The answer to this question is not so simple. Basically, dogs can eat sushi, but only in moderation and under certain conditions. There are both advantages and disadvantages of sushi for dogs that you should be aware of.

Advantages of sushi fordogs:

  • Fish is a good source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients that are important for skin, coat, heart and brain health.
  • Rice is an easily digestible carbohydrate that provides energy and soothes the stomach.
  • Vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and fiber that aid digestion and strengthen the immune system.
  • Nori is rich in iodine, iron and other trace elements that are important for thyroid function and blood formation.

Disadvantages of sushi for dogs:

  • Raw fish or seafood can contain bacteria, parasites or viruses that can lead to gastrointestinal infections or more serious illnesses such as salmonella or tapeworms. You should therefore only buy fresh, high-quality sushi or prepare it yourself and freeze it before eating to kill any germs.
  • Soy sauce, wasabi and ginger are too salty, spicy or sour for dogs and can lead to diarrhea, vomiting or stomach irritation. You should therefore leave these ingredients out or use them very sparingly.
  • Egg can cause allergies in some dogs or increase the risk of salmonella. You should therefore avoid it or only give it cooked.
  • Sugar and salt are harmful to dogs and can lead to obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure. Therefore, you should not sweeten or salt the rice.

How much sushi can my dog eat?

As with all treats, sushi should only be given as an occasional reward or treat and should not make up more than 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake. The exact amount depends on the size, age and activity level of your dog. As a rule of thumb, you can give about half to one whole roll per 10 kg of body weight. Make sure that your dog always has enough fresh water available.

Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of cooked rice and raw fish or seafood, sometimes with vegetables or nori. It can be suitable for dogs in moderation as fish provides high quality protein and nutrients. However, owners should be aware of the risks of raw fish, soy sauce and other ingredients and adjust the amount accordingly.
