A representation of Sugar cane molasses

Sugar cane molasses is a dark, viscous syrup that is produced during sugar production from sugar cane. It still contains many minerals, vitamins and trace elements that are missing in refined sugar. Sugar cane molasses is often used as a sweetener or flavor enhancer in food, but also as a dietary supplement for humans and animals. But is sugar cane molasses also good for dogs? In this article you will find out what sugar cane molasses is and what advantages and disadvantages it has for your dog.

What is sugar cane molasses?

Sugar cane molasses is a by-product of sugar production from sugar cane. Sugar cane is a tropical plant that can grow up to six meters high. Sugar is extracted from its juice by boiling and crystallizing. The residue is molasses, which still contains around 50 percent sugar. The molasses is processed further to extract more sugar. This produces different quality grades of molasses, which differ in color, taste and nutrient content. The highest quality is the light-colored molasses, which is produced after the first boiling. It has a mild taste and still contains many nutrients. Dark molasses is produced after the second boiling and has a stronger taste and fewer nutrients. Black molasses is produced after the third boiling and has a bitter taste and hardly any nutrients.
