Strontium hydroxide

A representation of Strontium hydroxide

Strontium hydroxide is an inorganic compound consisting of a strontium ion and two hydroxide ions. It is a strong alkali that reacts alkaline in water. It can be produced by the reaction of strontium metal with water or by the reaction of strontium salts with alkali lye.

What is strontium hydroxide?

Strontium hydroxide is a white solid that exists in several hydrate forms, such as the monohydrate (Sr(OH)2-H2O) and the octahydrate (Sr(OH)2-8H2O). It forms colorless, transparent crystals that are easily soluble in water. In the crystal structure of strontium hydroxide, each Sr2+ ion is surrounded by seven OH- ions at an average distance of 2.6 angstroms.

Strontium hydroxide reacts basic when dissolved in water and can neutralize acids to form the corresponding strontium salt and water. It also reacts with carbon dioxide from the air to form strontium carbonate.

Strontium hydroxide is used in industry as an intermediate in the production of other strontium compounds. It is also used as a reagent in chemical laboratories for titrimetric analysis.

Why is strontium hydroxide dangerous for dogs?

Strontium hydroxide is an irritant and corrosive substance that can cause skin and eye injuries on direct contact. It can also cause severe burns to the mouth, esophagus and stomach if swallowed. Symptoms of strontium hydroxide poisoning in dogs can include: salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, difficulty breathing, convulsions, shock and death.

Strontium hydroxide can also impair the absorption of calcium in the body, as it forms a poorly soluble complex with calcium. This can lead to a calcium deficiency, which has a negative effect on bone and dental health. Strontium hydroxide can also impair kidney function and lead to kidney failure.

How can you prevent strontium hydroxide poisoning in dogs?

To avoid strontium hydroxide poisoning in dogs, the following precautions should be taken:

  • Strontium hydroxide should always be stored in well-sealed containers in a cool, dry place that is inaccessible to children and pets.
  • Strontium hydroxide should never be transferred to food or beverage containers or mislabeled.
  • Strontium hydroxide should never be used as an ingredient in dog food or treats.
  • Always wear protective clothing, gloves and goggles when working with strontium hydroxide.
  • If you accidentally get strontium hydroxide on your skin or in your eyes, you should immediately rinse the affected area with plenty of water.
  • If a dog has swallowed strontium hydroxide or shows symptoms of poisoning, a vet should be consulted immediately.

Strontium hydroxide is a dangerous ingredient for dogs that can cause serious health problems. It should never come into contact with dogs or be administered to them. To avoid strontium hydroxide poisoning in dogs, you should take the appropriate safety precautions and consult a veterinarian in an emergency.
